GOOGLE BUY YOUTUBE FOR £900MILLION
By Mirror.co.uk
INTERNET search giant Google has snapped up video-sharing website YouTube in a £900million deal.

The deal unites two of the internet’s most popular brands and catapults Google to a leading role in the online video revolution.

Launched from a Silicon Valley garage in February 2005, YouTube has become the internet’s most popular destination for video content, with technology that allows anyone with a web connection to post, share and view videos online.

The site currently shows over 100 million videos per day, with users uploading nearly 500,000 new clips every week.

Google's chief executive officer Eric Schmidt said: "We are natural partners to offer a compelling media entertainment service to users, content owners and advertisers."

The price makes YouTube - a still-unprofitable start up - by far the most expensive purchase made by Google during its eight-year history.

Google say YouTube will continue to retain its brand, as well as all 67 employees, including co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.
